The bearing between my connecting rod and crankshaft seized, stopping my bike in it’s tracks and requiring a tow in. Luckily we were almost back and I had some friends that were willing to pull me the rest of the way. At the time I wasn’t sure what was seized so I just had to start tearing apart the engine until I could find the problem.
Splitting The Case
On a yfz450r, the crankshaft splits rather than the connecting rod and requires dissembling the entire engine for access. Once the case is split, you can remove the crankshaft assembly.
Preparing To Put Back Together
Because the failed bearing could have shed debris into the rest of the engine, all of the bearings had to replaced and every part of the engine had to be carefully cleaned.
Back To Riding!
I had torn the engine down during Christmas break from college. I had to wait until summer break before I was home and had time to start re-assembly, a long time had passed and it definitely added to the challenge. I was pretty nervous cranking the engine over the first time after the rebuild, but it fired right up! I was able to finally get back to riding!
