RC Plane Projects

The Hobby

Flying RC planes is a fun hobby that allows lots of tinkering, customizing, and fun.

If you have a local flying field, there’s normally a lot of other flyers that are more than happy to help get you flying and your plane in the air, at least that has been my experience at the Benton County Radio Control Club.  There’s a regular named Dave who flies every day and has helped dozens of people into the hobby, including myself.

Crashing

Unfortunately crashing happens and is part of the fun.  It gives you an opportunity to fix up and repair your plane, learning along the way.

Normally crashes are fixable and with some work you can get back in the air!

Applying New Film / Covering

It can be fun to change the color scheme or pattern of your planes.  The shrink film with heat activated adhesive is surprisingly easy to apply with an iron or hot air gun and sock, you just need patience.

I like Oregon State Colors....

Black and Orange are the colors of both my High School, and my College.  I can’t help but to make a few OSU Beaver themed planes.

FPV Systems

FPV can be a fun way to get a different perspective.  It’s actually surprisingly difficult to maintain orientation and perspective once you’re already used to a 3rd person perspective.  It gets even more confusing when you add head tracking, because then you lose orientation between the camera and the plane.

It’s fun to have guests watch through the goggles, especially when doing some acrobatics or 3D flying.

Slippery Slope

If you’re not careful, you’ll end up with a huge collection…  There’s a lot of different types of planes, different types of engines, and there’s a lot of really cheap planes that just need a little bit of work.  This is just a fraction of the planes I have, I think I’m finally down to 10-15 after running out of room and giving away some planes to the club and some of my younger cousins.
